My Fitness Journey - PX903 - A New Adventure

Well Folks. I've been on a new fitness adventure for the past 4 weeks............P90X3. Its a 90 day workout system that you do at home via either BeachBody on Demand (online streaming) or via the DVD's. I started with the BeachBody on Demand free 30 day trial but ended up buying the DVD's off Kijiji for a steal of a deal.

I've even given up my gym membership..........which was actually quite traumatic for me. I have residual feelings of guilt and sadness every time I see that YMCA logo:( It has been such a big part of my life these past 3 1/2 years.

I'm such a traitor.............I'm sorry YMCA.
I was quite happy with my level of fitness and my gym rat routine so why the change? Well I had a few reasons:

Time - I don't have it. I had been working out at the YMCA 4 times a week, usually for 45 minutes. I would either go:

  • on a day off to a 9:15 class which meant I wasn't done my workout until 10:00. By the time I took a shower, "put on my face" and drove home it would be 11 or later. I tended to chat in the locker room - hence the later, or
  • during my lunch hour at work which took about 1 1/2 hours by the time I walked there and back, showered, etc, or
  • before work. That was the best option in terms of limiting the time investment since I would just roll out of bed and go. But I would have to remember to pack SO MUCH STUFF the night before or risk showing up at work with no mascara (scary), no bra (that happened) or mismatched shoes.
I chose P90X3 because the workouts are only 30 minutes (plus a little cool down) and include a blend of cardio, strength and flexibility training. I get up at 5:45 or 6:00 (depending on whether its a work day), do my workout, have my shower and "put on my face" by 7:15. Done. Its incredible. The time savings in my day are incredible. So simple.

The downside is that I miss my YMCA friendships - those retired ladies are super nice and super inspirational. And I haven't taken many proper lunch breaks for weeks. Going for a class forced me to take a lunch break which was a great mental break. But the savings in time, increase in productivity and reduction in stress have been worth it.

Strategy - I didn't have one. I went to a variety of classes. I did yoga, HIIT, strength training, dance, Zumba, lifted weights. You name it, I did it. The plus side was that my workouts never got boring and my general level of fitness was pretty high from the constant muscle confusion. But I have to admit that I had hit a plateau. And the little layer of blubber around my middle was evidence. Don't get me wrong, lots of that problem is diet related (okay - sugar related - damn you sugar) but I also started to suspect that as much as I like the unpredictability of my workout I had absolutely no strategy. No targets for when/how much cardio strength or flexibility training I was getting in any given week/month. Hence the plateau. I needed a trainer (for which I'm way too cheap) and some structure in my workouts.

Variety - I need it. As mentioned above I like variety in my workouts. And I also tend to get a little obsessed with one thing for a while and then get sick of it. I've been through various phases where I go hard on one type of exercise, and then I'm over it and move on to the next thing. I went through a pretty hard-core yoga phase in 2014/15 so now everyone thinks I'm a YOGI - except I haven't really practiced for the past year. Shhhh - let's pretend I'm still super zen. Namaste.

So maybe this is just my next thing. Which is fine. I'll do it for 90 days and then see what comes next. It keeps things fun and interesting. Its got me pretty excited about working out again.

So that's why I've given up my gym membership (gasp) and am doing P90X3 in the confines of my basement. I've just finished up week 4 so stay tuned on how I'm finding it- another blog post is imminent.

Lots to report. No - I don't have a six pack...........but maybe a two pack. And I have time. I definitely have more time. Notice I've actually started blogging again..................

FItness Friday - Fun for the Whole Family

She is obsessed with going this one now..........................
Some of you might know that I'm going through a bit of a YOGA phase. Addicted.

I have an intense personality. And I constantly need new interests and challenges.

So although I am LOVING yoga so much that I wanna swear this is it. I found my exercise soul-mate. I'm done searching. This. Is. It.

I really don't know. I kind of felt that way about Zumba two years ago. And then biking. And then HIIT. And now yoga. But damn do I love it. Really really love it.

I guess the point is that you need to keep searching for things you love doing to keep exercise a mainstay in your life. Don't try to force yourself to do something you no longer enjoy. Don't feel bad when you walk away from an activity. As long as you are walking towards something else. And there are so many things out there to try. Oh - if only I had more time.

Although I am LOVING my yoga classes (I do all kinds from restorative/gentle to Ashtanga/Vinyasa Flow/Power), I guess I started to get a bit itchy to try something new.

So yesterday I went completely out of my comfort zone and dropped in for an AcroYoga class.............OH. WHAT. FUN. Taking turns flying and being flown in the air by complete strangers. What an experience. Bucket list - check!

And tonight the kids and I did AcroYoga all night. Now my 5-year-old is completely addicted too. Her last words before bedtime were "Please mama, one more yoga".

So I'm challenging all of you, if you are bored with your usual routine or just don't have a routine, go find something fun to do.

I need someone to do this with me............hubby is athletically gifted by flexibility challenged.
Now I have a partner to help me work on my scorpion. Much better company than the wall.

A family affair. Still need to figure out how the little one can get involved in this pose. So far he just likes to stomp or sit on my face.

Resolutions for a New Year - Eat LOTS of Vegan Gluten-free Queso Cheese Dip - Because It's Awesome

This is my New Year's gift to you. A really EASY recipe for a dip that will make you forget you had to give up dairy. According to friends at work, "soaking cashews" doesn't qualify as easy, but they have obviously not given up major food groups and/or processed foods. This is relatively simple for those of us that are used to cooking from scratch and know how to boil water. I got quite a laugh out of that conversation as I sometimes forget that the average person eats a ton of pre-packed/prepared foods. It's all relative and for me this is relatively simple.

I am so excited about this recipe. I've made it three times in two weeks and I'm making it again tomorrow. Its great with gluten free chips. And I used it to make nacho super fries. French fries smothered in nacho cheese and salsa............something I haven't had in almost three years. And it was damn good.  I can't wait to try this in all kinds of recipes.....watch out 2015.

I was going to do a big New Years post on all my goals for 2015, my reflections on 2014, blah, blah, blah. But you know what, I've got a great recipe to share so I'm just going to send out a challenge instead..................soak some cashews and make this dip to celebrate the new year!

And I left you a little motivation/tip just for fun!

Happy New Year! Bring it on 2015!

Vegan Mexican Queso Cheese Dip

by MamaChanty
Prep Time: 10 minutes + 1 hour to soak ca
Cook Time: 1-2 minutes
Keywords: blender saute appetizer vegan gluten-free nutritional yeast cashews green chili
Ingredients (serves a crowd)
  • 1 cup raw soaked cashews
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or other non-dairy milk substitute)
  • 1/2 Tbsp arrowroot starch - optional
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp taco seasoning (I used homemade so low salt)
  • 3 Tbsp Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 Tbsp Earth Balance (or other non-dairy butter replacement)
  • 1/4 cup onion finely diced (I used red onion)
  • 1/4 cup pepper finely diced (I used orange)
  • 1 large clove garlic - finely minced
  • 1 Tbsp fresh Cilantro, chopped (optional)
  • 1 can mild green chili's
Instructions
You can either soak the cashews for 4 hours in cold water or speed things up (if you are impatient like me) and soak them for 1 hour in boiling water. Drain.
Add almond milk, nutritional yeast, starch and taco seasoning to cashews.
Blend in blender or food processor until full pureed and smooth. I was able to do this using my Magic Bullet.
In a frying plan, melt Earth Balance over low/medium heat. Add onions, peppers and garlic. Saute until vegetables are softened. This will just take a few minutes. Add sauteed vegetables, can of green chili's and Cilantro to pureed cashew mixture. Mix by hand until fully combined.
You can refrigerate mixture at this point. When you are ready to serve, warm up in microwave for 1 - 2 minutes - stopping to stir every minute.
Serve with gluten free taco's or crackers. You can top the dip with diced tomatoes, green onion or additional Cilantro if you want to jazz it up.
Enjoy.

I'll Run a Marathon When Pig "eon"s Fly!

My Saturday night adventures....................working on my flying pigeon arm balance pose.
My idea of a fun way to get your heart rate up!

I hate cardio. Like I REALLY hate cardio.

If you know me.........in "real" life you know that I detest running.  Always have, always will.  Yet I've always felt that I should put "run a marathon (um, I mean half)" on my bucket list. SO many other people push themselves to do it........why can't I?

Well, because I hate it. And I was just comparing myself to other people and feeling like I was not measuring up to some imagined expectation I made of myself. My competitive spirit felt a little (big) streak of jealousy each time I heard about someone else's accomplishment of running 13 or 26 miles and not dying.

I swear I would die. Physically, and more importantly mentally. Running is mental torture for me.

So I've given up on my non-dream. And now "run a @#$#'ing marathon" is on my non-bucket list. The list of things I am promising to myself I will never do.

Freedom.

I don't like running. I don't generally like cardio, not the traditional kind anyway.

So I don't do it. I don't do aerobics anymore. I don't even do much HIIT anymore. And I certainly don't turn on my treadmill anymore.

Those of you who think I'm a fitness fanatic might be scratching your heads. No cardio. How can that be?

I've changed my approach to exercise. I don't punish my body anymore doing things I don't enjoy. I don't work out like a madwoman when I'm exhausted. I don't constantly PUNISH my very weak adrenals by working myself to the point of severe exhaustion. And I don't punish my mind anymore by feeling like I'm not measuring up.

Don't get me wrong. I work out hard. When, if and how I feel like it.

I started dancing again. Joy.

I do yoga - hot, intense, flow, yin, gentle - whatever class I can get to. Esctasy.

And I go to the gym to lift some weights, stretch, do yoga poses, balance on the Bosu. Whatever I'm in the mood for.

The reward of not punishing my body with exercise that I hate is that I crave my workouts. Not just the end - the sense of accomplishment when its over. The actual process. I can't wait to get to my next class. I guess because I'm doing things I love, and I know that if I'm not up for it, I will just take it easy. And that's okay.

Its working for me. I feel fit. I feel strong.

I'll see you at the finish line...................but I'll just be cheering you on or stretching in the cool down area!

MamaGetsFit - Forearms and Fun.......with a little anxiety on the side

Up, Up and AWAY! I can do them. If very briefly. Next time I'll wear my hair back so you can see that my head is not touching the ground.

Hey Folks.

Happy May Long Weekend.

The sun is finally shining in Winnipeg. We are FINALLY getting spring.

That makes me happy.

And the fact that the ANXIETY that was gripping me for the past week or two seems to have left the building also makes me happy. Very happy. So happy I could do handstands.

Actually, my cousin sent me a pin (and a challenge) that she wanted to see me do forearm handstands.

So I have been working on them. My daughter had to take this picture when we were at the park. Poor kid..............I am really embarrassing to go places with.

Easy. No. Do-able. Barely. Fun. Hell yeah!

So far the longest one I have been able to hold was about 5 seconds. The falling out of a forearm handstand part is not really that fun............

So just a little progress update for my cuz! Thanks for the challenge.............always good to get some new goals and a little muscle confusion.

I will give another update on my anxiety when I feel confident I have licked it. Day 2 of being anxiety free so I don't want to shout my solutions from the rooftops and jinx myself.

So if all goes well I will do a post soon on how I licked my anxiety. And my kids have been busy licking lots of spoons -  so I've got some really great new recipes coming too!

Hope you all have a tasty, up-side-down, anxiety-free long weekend!

Yeah - that hurts.............I like it much better when I fall back down the other way.

Weekend Reflections - Blogging, Burpees, Baskets and Blessings

Easter Weekend.

A time to celebrate. A time for tradition. A time to be thankful.

A time to do burpees?

I'm playing with blogger. Now that I don't "have" to blog twice a week I feel like blogging. And I felt like trying to see if I could add a video to my blog. My first one EVER!

So my 4 year old took a video of me doing burpees this morning (she nailed it). I have no idea if its going to work. If it does, that's me. And yes, it is April 19th and our front yard is still covered in snow.

I LOVE doing burpees. Full - hit the floor and then jump in the air- burpees. I know some people will hate me for saying that. Sorry. Maybe you like jogging. Well I hate jogging. We're even.

Seriously though. I have three kids, I work, I make most of our food from scratch - I don't have much time to work out. So I go hard when I do. I've had a few people ask me what I'm training for - life. Keeping up with three kids. But don't ask me to run. I don't run.

So if you want to get in shape - try doing three sets of 10 - even if that is ALL you do you will have had a good workout. They are killer and AWESOME! But start slow - work up to the full burpees - work up to 10. I don't want anyone to hurt themselves.

And we are counting our blessings this weekend. I am happy to say that I am feeling REALLY good. I've had lots of ups and downs the past 5 years. Some really LOW lows. But right now, today, I feel pretty great. The stars have aligned for me. I've worked for it. I keep working for it. I can't let my guard down. I take care of myself. It might seem selfish sometimes - always protecting my sleep, getting my workouts in, taking my supplements, eating a certain way (which can be a pain for others if they feel the need to feed me), saying NO. But the pay off for those around me is that I am happy. I have energy. My husband told me yesterday - I've been really liking you lately. Thanks hubby. I like you too. I'm more likable when I'm healthy and I like others a lot more.

Rather than being trapped in survival mode, I have energy to do fun things with my kids. And actually be in the moment with them to enjoy it.

So here are a couple of other fun things we have been doing this weekend................

Our Good Friday craft. Making stamps out of potato's. That was followed by making perogies out of potatoes. Recipe to come sometimes this week.

We went to church to get our baskets blessed!  A little non-traditional twist on a very traditional part of my childhood. Are those Caramilk clean? NO. Did I have one. Yes!

I hope everyone has a very blessed and beautiful Easter!

Христос Воскрес! (Khrystos Voskres!)

Christ is Risen!

BTW if someone happens to say that to you "in person" this is how you should respond........

Воїстину Воскрес! (Voyistynu Voskres!)

 Truly He is Risen!

Fitness Friday - Happy One Year Anniversary to Me - Mama Got Fit doing High Intensity Interval Training - And Loves it!

Well, I've come full circle.

I don't talk too much about what I'm doing from a fitness perspective. Maybe I should. But it always comes off braggy even in my own head. And I'm no expert. For some reason I feel more confident in sharing my recipe experimentation than in my fitness experimentation.

But fitness has become a huge part of my life. Again. And has helped and helps me feel good each and every day. Whether I work out or not. And this is my one-year anniversary of getting back into shape. A decision that was the catalyst for Mama-Going-Clean. The first step in a complete overhaul of our lifestyle.

Rewind one year from this weekend. I was about 3 or 4 weeks postpartum (baby #3).

I started off my pregnancy about 15 pounds heavier than my pre-kids weight. I ended up my pregnancy about 50 or 60 pounds heavier. I was barely walking for the last two months of my pregnancy. I was a hot mess. Ligament pain. Sore & tired legs. Achy. Not a picture of physical fitness.

Last August long-weekend I stepped on my Mother-in-Laws scale. And my jaw dropped. Holy hell I had a LOT of baby weight to lose.

This was bad. I was scared. What if it didn't come off? Why did I let myself gain so much? Why did I stop exercising for 5 years? Okay - I did a Zumba class here and there and went for a walk once in a while but it was minimal to say the least.

Back then I equated weight loss almost 100% with exercise. I thought you lost weight in the gym. Now I know that you lose weight in the kitchen. You get fit in the gym. You get strong in the gym.

So my first reaction to the numbers on the scale was to decide to start working out. And that meant getting my "slightly" round bottom and belly some new workout clothes and down to the classes at the YMCA. I had no big plans yet to change my eating. Give up chocolate bars. No thank-you.

So classes I did. Lots of them. Cardio, Strength, Zumba, Yoga, Cycle and Intervals. I did 4 to 5 classes a week. It was hard. I thought I was going to die the first few weeks. My face would be red for most of the day.  The retired ladies were my inspiration. I'm not kidding. There is a great group of them at my gym. Some of them are there everyday. EVERYDAY. They amaze me. They are always smiling. I remember struggling along and thinking "if grandma over there can do it, and be smiling, I can do it".

It was painful but it didn't take long and I was getting stronger. I was jumping higher, running harder, lifting more.

Somewhere along the way I started to realize that I LOVE INTERVAL training. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Tabata training. Plymetrics. Short bursts of high intensity training followed by active recovery periods. Using your own body weight as resistance.  Jumps. Quick moves. Light weights in between as recovery. Click here for a sample of a workout I might do or go to my MamaGetsFit Pinterest board for lots of HIIT ideas and general motivation.

And HIIT loves me. I feel great after a workout. I feel stronger than I can ever remember. I am in better shape than I can ever remember. And that's saying a lot because there have been times in my life when I was dancing over 10 hour a week and lifting weights.

And I don't mean my body "looks" better than ever. I am slim. Yes. I have great muscle definition. Yes. (I told you it would sound braggy). But three pregnancies have changed my body in some unpleasant ways that I can't seem to reverse. Varicose veins everywhere. Yes. Flat stomach. No.

But I FEEL fit. I FEEL strong. I FEEL like a beast when I'm working out. You would laugh your head off if you saw my scrawny arms.

I have a great base level of fitness to get through my everyday life without it even being a second thought. I can't remember the last time I felt out of breathe. I can carry my:  kids, groceries, diaper bags, workout bag and/or all of the above. I can sprint up the stairs when someone is screaming from their room in distress. I enjoy going for bike rides. I can pull a fully loaded up wagon on a picnic and easily throw my stroller in the trunk. I can run after a kite or a ball.

You might think "big deal". Yes. It is a big deal. I had let myself get really out of shape and I didn't enjoy a lot of those things. They felt like such a chore. I was out of breathe all the time.

So what does my fitness life look like a year later.
  • I have cut back my work outs to about three times a week for 45 minutes. Sometimes one extra work-out. Sometimes 15 extra minutes. But sometimes less. I try and listen to my body and rest when it needs it. And I give it a workout or a good stretch when it is crying for one. My general rule is that I don't do HIIT two days in a row (too hard on my body) but I try and never go more than 2 days in a row without a work-out (because then I start to feel lazy and don't want to start again).
  • I'm not going to lie, when I work out for those 45 minutes I work out hard. I push. I don't have time to be at the gym for hours. I go hard and then I go home. Plus I do my strength and cardio as part of the same workout (kill two birds with one stone) so I try and keep a fast pace with active recovery and very short rest periods to keep my heart rate up the whole time.
  • I started the year using 5 pound weights for strength training. I ended the year using 12 1/2 pound weights. I could do heavier weights but I want long lean muscles not bulk so I keep them light and focus on repetition.
  • Although I still love group fitness I have FINALLY, after all these years, found something that I can do at home or at the gym in my own time. I don't have to be a slave to the  class schedule.
  • When I'm at home I usually use the online Tabata timer . At the gym I just use the clock  on the wall or the timer on my phone. I do a high intensity exercise for 1 minute and then do an active recovery of light weights.
  • On days that I'm not doing HIIT and/or my body needs a break I will go for a walk, bike ride or take a strength or cardio class to change things up.
Why am I sharing this. Because I'm sure there is someone else out there that has given up on fitness. That thinks they are too out of shape to go to the gym.  That they don't have time. That its not worth all the effort.

It is. You will feel so good. You will feel strong. Maybe HIIT is not for you (although I swear it is so fun and it will give you results in the shortest amount of time). But find something you love. Something you can look forward. And do it.

Don't do it to lose weight - you will likely be disappointed.  Start eating clean to do that. But if that's what gets you to the gym, then sure, do it to lose weight. But do it. If you are like me and tipping towards 40 now is the time to take your fitness and health into your hands. Don't be passive. Don't think you will have time next week, next month, next year. Life if busy with kids. Its not going to get easier. Or by the time it gets easier your body might not appreciate your new hobby. And it might not even let you get started again.

You have to just decide to do it. Make time for yourself. For your health. And ultimately for your kids. A fit Mom is a funner Mom - she dances longer, she throws them in the air, she goes tobogganing, she skates - she enjoys these things because they don't exhaust her.

I started the year 30 pounds over my pre-kids weight and I ended it 10 pounds under. But who gives a crap about that - I'll probably just gain it back when I stop breastfeeding. I'm just saying it out loud because most people are motivated by weight lose success stories. So maybe I will get someone's attention. And like me they will hit the gym to lose weight. And in the meantime find something else there a lot more valuable. Fitness. Strength. Fun.

So why do I say I have come full circle this year? Well, I started it out being motivated by the retired set at the gym (and still am). And this week, not one, but two, of the female trainers at the gym stopped by to tell me that I inspire them. WHAT. SERIOUSLY. The little scrawny armed Ukrainian dancer that runs like a girl and can't hit a baseball to save her life is inspiring the trainers. Its frigging awesome. It's my one legged squats. I'm up to 8 on one leg and 10 on the other. Plus I go like hell. But I'm only there 3 times a week for 45 minutes. You could make time for that? Couldn't you?

That's what you can do in a year girls. You can go from not being able to walk up a set of stairs without getting winded to inspiring trainers.  Do it. Get busy. Start slow. Find something you love. And go. Go hard and then go home. You will be glad you did!

NOTE TO SELF - Please come back and read this in 6 months after being off maternity leave and make sure you are still following this advice. Do you still love burpees Chantel? If you think you can't find 45 minutes 3 times a week you are just making excuses? Don't give it up Mama - it makes you happy. Keep going. Give up something else. Just don't give up this. And if you have to start from scratch again that's okay. You did it once. You can do it again.

Fitness Friday - Mama Gets Fit with a Tabata Plyometric Workout - Here's a sample

Well, I have been faithfully working out for the past 8 1/2 months. For the first 6/7 months I was loving getting to the YMCA for my group classes at 9:15 a few times a week. But baby's getting older and I am feeling bad about disrupting his nap so my Y visits are getting fewer and farther between.

Now I was never good at working out at home. I hate jogging and I find the treadmill BORING as heck. Haven't turned mine on in about 2 years. So I HAD to come up with a home workout that I enjoyed and THIS IS IT.

I can get this done in about 35 minutes. Its an all over body workout. You don't need any equipment except a laptop or phone that you can use for the Tabata Timer. Go to www.tabatatimer.com for the free timer.

Each round will take you 4:00 minutes. Basically you do each move as hard as you can for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds. Each round you will do the moves twice each for a total of 8 moves.

In between rounds I usually need a 1-2 minute recovery for water and if I'm really energetic I like to do some light weights (say biceps after round 1, shoulder press after round 2, triceps after round 3) for an "active recovery". Just to help with this chicken arm situation.

If you push as hard as you can for 20 seconds you will be sweaty and you will get fit. If you don't know all of these moves just Google them or do a search on Pinterest. Or replace the unknowns with something you do know. Just keep moving.

I don't talk about fitness a lot on my blog but it has been a huge factor in getting my health (and body) back. I am having "mood" issues and I always feel so much better after my work outs.

I was losing some motivation this week - I don't need to lose any more weight and I'm getting a bit tired. Baby is still up 3 times a night 10 months in (arghhhh). But Wednesday my cardio instructor gave us a pep talk on "keeping going, never stopping" especially in the tough seasons of our life. It was timely.

I  like feeling fit. I like running up the stairs without getting winded. I like throwing my baby in the air and watching him squeal. I need to stay fit.

I found something I love. I just need to keep it up.

You can't get bored with this - especially if you keep changing up the moves which I do everytime I work out.

This is just a sample of what I did this morning during babies nap. But he's up now so I gotta go. Have fun.

A word on Fitness..............not to be forgotten

I haven't said much about fitness in my blog because: 1)  if I have energy, 2) I'm in a routine and 3) I've past the "I want to die" phase - I like exercising and find it fun. That's why I could never get into jogging - can't get past the 10 minute I want to die phase. Its the eating part of my clean lifestyle that I find most challenging and that's why I obsess about how to make it tasty so I can stay on track. Plus, before I started eating clean I didn't really have the energy to feel like exercising - I was on a blood sugar roller coaster, had stomach aches and didn't sleep well.  No surprise that I didn't feel like working out. So I think cleaning up my diet was the critical step for changing my health.

But I did want to mention that in the past six months, since baby #3, I have completely changed how I work out. I do mostly high intensity interval training, including both cardio and strength training, and I constantly change up my workout by going to different classes and doing different moves pretty much every time I work out. My muscles are constantly being "surprised" and muscle confusion is a great thing for building strength and changing your body. And its a great way to keep yourself engaged and excited about working out.

That's my right shoulder that just recently gave me two years of chronic pain and I thought might put me on pain killers for the rest of my life. I am drug free, have only rare pain and have full range of motion. A miracle!

I work out quite a bit (3 - 5 times a week) but I do a relatively short work-out - 45 minutes. So I'm working out about 2 1/4 - 3 3/4 hours a week. And I actually feel more fit and strong than in my 20's when I was dancing a minimum of 6 hours a week plus going to the gym at least once or twice. I have more aches and pains than back then but I definitely feel more fit. Hmmm, what's going on here!

Well, other than the poor diet choices I used to make, I think its the high intensity intensity interval training and strength training that is working for me. Some great work-outs you can do at home are plyometric moves and/or Tabata work-outs. I also found an awesome Tababa timer online so you can just let your computer deal with making sure you are following the time. Very helpful. You can pretty much do it with any exercise - there are a million examples out there.  And if you have even one set of light/medium weights you can do lots of basic strength training. I use 8 lb weights at home and 10 lb at the gym and I have seen a significant change in muscle definition. I'm not interested in bulking up - I just want to be fit to keep up with my kids and keep my shoulder and back strong to ward off anymore injuries. And I find it fun!

I've gotten fit, by doing shortish, intense work-outs that I can make time for - because what we all don't have much of these days is time. My last pregnancy really changed my body so even at 20 pounds lighter than when I got pregnant my stomachs not as flat (not fair) and I have some hideous varicose veins. I might not wear shorts again but I'm going to rock a tank top this summer (at least until the breastfeeding Gods come back for their boobs) and hopefully I will keep feeling this energetic. You can too if you can find 45 minutes three times a week and some motivation!

I am not bragging I am just trying to give you some motivation - 8 months ago I spent several mornings crying in my car because the thought of the walk to my office was too much for me...I can't believe that now my fitness goal is to do Tabata handstand push-ups...............Lots can happen if you eat clean and set your mind to things. And it doesn't hurt to be on maternity leave.

So far the only thing I can do is stand in this position for 20 seconds, 8 times. I can't do an actually dip. Its bloody hard.
And remember, I'm not a cook, nutritionist, doctor or physical trainer. I'm just sharing my experiences - consult a professional before starting a new training program if you aren't sure what you are doing. Getting hurt can be worse than doing nothing! And start slow - I couldn't keep up with the "retired ladies" at the gym six months ago.
